A complaint was recently filed with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) by End Citizens United, against Senate candidate Rick Scott. The former Florida Governor has raised more than $78 million for his campaign, and the political action committee (PAC) is alleging that the funds to operate the campaign are being funneled through a “super PAC.” In the complaint, the PAC states that Scott has knowingly taken actions to circumvent the federal limits that were put in place to prevent direct contributions to be transferred to a campaign for operating expenses. Scott has been receiving funds directly from the New Republican PAC.
The Scott campaign has steadfastly denied all allegations. However, according to Tiffany Mueller, President of End Citizens United, the actions are clearly in violation of the FEC laws. “This is not a smear campaign…This is a legitimate FEC complaint because [Rick Scott] broke the law.” End Citizens United’s complaint speaks directly to the super PAC having every right to continually raise as much money it chooses and to spend as much, or as little, of the money it chooses; however, the process must be within the established campaign laws. The PAC used the anti-coordination law to file the complaint.
Adam Bozzi, Communications Director for the PAC says that it is clear that Scott has been more motivated by his political aspirations rather than abiding by the FEC laws and campaign processes that have been put into place to safeguard the integrity of the political system. He stated that Scott deliberately bypassed the election laws to funnel soft money into his campaign. End Citizens United has provided documented proof of the allegations within the complaint. According to the communications director, the super PAC money is being used to pay Scott’s campaign expenses and covertly intended to elude the disclosure laws that exits for a reason. The documentation also pointed out that Scott was still a chairman for the super PAC as recently as January 2018, which was further supported by the information listed on New Republican PAC’s website.
The information provided in the complaint is backed by the Tampa Bay Times, which also reported in detail how Scott was raising money for the New Republican PAC in February. In an article published by the Washington Post, Scott also planned to host a dinner for the contributors of the super PAC.
It is the belief of End Citizens United that Scott has no desire to agree to any campaign finance reform, and therefore, the PAC plans to defeat him once the midterm election votes are counted.
Court rulings, though indirectly, act as a legal precedent in interpretation of future maters. This remarkably applies if the verdict came from a court of higher standing like the Supreme Court. The American society suffered under such consequences in the infamous 2010 Supreme Court ruling in the matter of Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission. It stemmed from a 2008 Federal Election Commission’s decision barring Citizens United from airing a 90 minute purported film based on Hilary. It was observed by the commission that the video was purely a campaigning advert targeting to tarnish the image of one of the candidates. Even though their efforts got limited, this didn’t deter them from concealing the primary source of fund for the film though the federal law at that time deemed this as mandatory. The Supreme Court’s ruling was phenomenal, bringing in a profound shift in matters of free speech.
Previously discreet and silent advertisers suddenly started coming up with numerous television and radio advertisement during the campaign season. Most purely based on the precedent of the previous court ruling that donors don’t necessarily have to take personal responsibility. A great political debate ensued that lead to combined efforts towards overturning the adverse effect of the Citizen’s ruling considering the negative reception to the verdict. This led to the formation of End Citizens United at the beginning of March 2015 that established its headquarters in Washington, DC. The primary role of the organization is to dilute and end the ramifications brought about by the Citizens United ruling.
Funding mostly concentrates on grassroots sources to remove the heavy reliance on heavy corporate involvement. Also, they focus on Democratic candidates that are interested in ending the effects of the ruling on the political environment. The strategical application of different policies to counteract the Citizens United ruling is twofold. Create massive support for those political candidates interested in the initiative and then direct necessary effort in overturning the verdict. End Citizens United mainly utilizes the digital platform to acquire funds. The leadership team consists of people who have amassed great political experience mostly in the Democratic Party and in other territories. End Citizens United has over 380,000 grassroots donor base and is increasingly building on its staff quantity. The primary role of the organization is to pledge support for those people who are going for political office and are not interested in getting funded by large corporations.

During his appearance in Washington DC at a federal three judge panel, James Bopp, a lawyer from Terre Haute in Indiana, got laughed out of the court room. This instance occurred upon him arguing that his clients, Citizens United, should be allowed to air a movie that portrayed Hillary Clinton as a ruthless political schemer and a European Socialist known as Hillary: The Movie. Apparently, the movie was to be aired during the Democratic Presidential Preliminaries on on-demand TV.
The verdict from the FEC, Federal Election Commission, stated that Citizens United could not advertise nor air the movie during the period as it came to a total of 90 minutes for an advertising campaign and it did not show who subscribed to it. He believed that the creators of the movie deserve the First Amendment protection, as the movie does not differ from the 60-minute movies. This statement made by James Bopp made Royce Lamberth, the US District Court Judge, laugh out loud and said that it differs from the 60-minute movies.
Two years later, in 2010, the Supreme Court overturned the verdict and took up most of James Bopp’s arguments. Seeing as spending was considered a form of speech that the First Amendment protected, the justices in FEC vs. Citizens United saw that corporations received that protection as well. They confirmed that corporations had the rights of the First Amendment as they are considered persons, thus blocking them from supporting or defeating candidates via spending would be unconstitutional. Thanks to James Bopp’s numerous years working to wash away campaign-finance regulations, the Citizens United was born. His work did not stop there, Bopp is going after challenges to break down about each facet of regulations affecting campaign-finance. Tara Malloy, an associate of the Campaign Legal Centre, notes that James Bopp is at the forefront of a largely based litigation assault that is waged against laws on federal and state campaign-finance. It is believed that James Bopp uses small and mission-oriented organizations to broaden loopholes within the law which tends to benefit political allies as well as wealthy corporations eventually. He has also been called the Republican Party’s straw man in their strive for campaign-finance laws to be dismantled.
The End Citizens United is as political action committee that aims to shove big money out of politics, despite raising a large sum itself. End Citizens United has accumulated over $4 million within the first quarter of the year and believes that it shall acquire $35 million before the midterm elections for Congress in 2018, as per the figures availed to the USA Today. This would be a great increase as compared to PAC’s $25 million in the 2016 elections. An estimated 100,000 people chipped into the PAC within the first quarter of this year and for 40,000 of them were first timers, as stated by Tiffany Muller, Executive Director and President of PAC. This year, the average contribution was estimated at $12.
After spending millions in contributions to super PACs and the Clinton campaign, George Soros and his foundation Democracy Alliance hosted a meeting, intended to combat Donald Trump and his plans for the country. The conference was held at Washington D.C.’s pricey Mandarin Oriental hotel. The meeting was attended by several influential union leaders ad Democrats including Nancy Pelosi, Elizabeth Warren and Congressional Progressive Caucus co-chairman Keith Ellison.
Attendees also discussed changing polling and rethinking their way on how to win the working-class voters on Biography. Democratic leadership believes they need to spend more time training officials. George Soros’ DA group has contributed more than $500 million to a handful of groups including those supporting the left including Media Matters. Following Clinton’s surprise loss on election day, Soros was forced to change the meeting’s agenda at https://www.opensocietyfoundations.org/people/george-soros.
Prior to the 2016 election, George Soros spent some time away from fundraising, following the aftermath of the 2004 election. Soros has been a strong opponent of Donald Trump sharing his disgust for the comments and policies Donald Trump has made during the election cycle. George Soros has said he will continue to be politically involved until he sees the issues that matter to him and the Democratic party are finally taken care of and properly replaced with policies that support those affected.
